The Bowl of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

When I was a Fawakih student we used to listen to stories from the Seerah (life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) to practice our Arabic listening skills. I would listen to them over and over again to pick up as many words as I could.

A story of how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would name his belongings has stuck with me. He ﷺ would name his tools, clothings, weapons, animals and even his turban. He ﷺ called his turban سحاب (sahaab), meaning cloud. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ named his drinking bowl الريان (ar-rayyaan), meaning the one satisfied with drink.

Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ drinking bowl (pictured above) is one of several items displayed in the Chamber of Holy Relics in Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul.

An interesting aside: back in 2011, Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, received a purported bowl used by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ via private jet from descendants living in London. Kadyrov paraded it down the people-lined streets of Grozny in a motorcade of luxury cars toward the grand mosque. He broke down in tears when he removed the bowl from the case to present it to the surrounding crowd. Putting Kadyrov’s politics aside, the reverence that he and the people of Chechnya exhibited for this bowl is astounding mashaAllah.

When you name a thing that means that thing has value. Revive the sunnah of naming your cups, bowls and plates. Mindfully reuse them over and over again this Ramadan. Their history makes them more beautiful.

Revive a sunnah. Use reusables.
